Communications Campaigner – US Region

Job Description

The United States Communications Campaigner at Oil Change International (OCI) is tasked with creating and executing communication strategies, tools, and tactics to support the objectives of the U.S. team. This role involves close collaboration with the U.S. team members, cross-team communications staff, and key partners. OCI’s U.S. team partners with national, grassroots, and frontline organizations to challenge fossil fuel expansion and promote a scientifically and justly grounded fossil fuel phase-out.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Development (20%)

  • Collaborate with OCI’s U.S. Team to design and implement communication and media strategies to support ongoing activities.
  • Plan and execute communication strategies to promote our messaging and campaign goals during key international political events and report releases.
  • Work with OCI’s Communications Director and team to align U.S. communications goals and improve shared communication platforms.

Media Outreach (20%)

  • Work with the Communications Manager to develop and maintain press lists relevant to the U.S. team’s work.
  • Build relationships with reporters and pitch stories related to U.S. team campaigns and initiatives.
  • Monitor media coverage and public narratives concerning U.S. team activities in various news outlets.
  • Track metrics to evaluate impact.

Content Creation & Dissemination (45%)

  • Produce engaging materials to reach target audiences by simplifying complex information into compelling content (e.g., press releases, fact sheets, emails, blog posts, social media content, graphics, videos).
  • Ensure all content aligns with campaign messaging and brand guidelines.
  • Manage content calendars and publishing schedules.
  • Use OCI’s platforms to send press releases, supporter emails, and social media posts.
  • Prepare rapid reactive content related to U.S. team priorities.
  • Develop materials to support advocacy efforts like petitions, action alerts, and campaign toolkits.

Partner Engagement (10%)

  • Provide communications support to regional and local partners involved in anti-fossil fuel campaigns.
  • Collaborate with communications-focused allies in civil society networks to enhance campaign visibility.
  • Maintain working relationships with partner communicators.
  • Identify collaboration opportunities with key stakeholders and partners.
  • Offer communications support to partner organizations as needed.

Administration (5%)

  • Update and maintain quarterly and annual goals and individual work plans.
  • Participate constructively in staff and team meetings.
  • Coordinate messaging and activities with OCI’s cross-team communications staff.
  • Help maintain OCI’s shared calendar of upcoming projects and deadlines.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to administrative requests, including submitting timesheets and expense reports on time.

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

Required Skills / Experience

  • Proficiency in English (writing, reading, and speaking).
  • Three to five years of experience in advocacy related to social justice and/or energy and climate policies, with a proven track record in developing and implementing communications strategies.
  • Ability to translate technical or complex materials into engaging content for media, advocacy targets, civil society partners, and supporters.

Desired Skills / Experience

  • Existing relationships with journalists covering climate and energy issues in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Experience working in a remote global office environment.
  • Ability to collaborate and build relationships in multicultural teams across time zones.
  • Experience with social media strategy development and implementation.
  • Familiarity with media tracking and engagement tools.
  • Proficiency with Google Apps and graphic design and video editing tools.
  • Proficiency in Spanish (writing, reading, and speaking).
