Profile Overview

We are looking for a dynamic Lead Engineer (Web/Java) to spearhead the technical transformation of our latest SaaS acquisition in HR tech. This role demands a visionary leader with hands-on expertise in Java, JSP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and MySQL. The candidate will inherit the codebase and infrastructure from the solo founder and will drive modernization, scalability, and team growth to ensure the product meets the highest standards of performance and usability.

Your Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Overhaul the existing tech stack to enhance performance, scalability, and maintainability by transitioning to cloud-based technology.
  • Stay actively involved in coding while guiding the team in best practices and modern development techniques.
  • Drive the adoption of saas.group’s technical standards (aka our “Paved Road”).

Team Management

  • Build and manage a high-performing technical team.
  • Mentor and develop team members to enhance their skills and career growth.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative, remote-first team culture, prioritizing outcomes over outputs.

Project Management

  • Oversee the end-to-end development lifecycle, including planning, execution, and delivery.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and delivery.

Stakeholder Communication

  • Report directly to the responsible board member at saas.group.
  • Communicate technical progress, challenges, and solutions clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Influence and contribute to the product roadmap based on technical insights and market trends.

Budget Responsibility

  • Manage the tech budget, ensuring cost-effective solutions and investments.
  • Evaluate and implement tools and technologies that enhance development efficiency and product quality.

What You Bring to the Table

  • Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Excellence in Java (currently no framework; future integration of a state-of-the-art framework favored).
  • Good knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and MySQL.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and best practices.
  • Experience with modernizing legacy systems and scaling SaaS applications in the cloud.
  • Familiarity with modern tech stacks including GitHub, GitHub Actions, AWS, and other cloud platforms.
  • Proven track record of building and leading technical teams.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and expectations.
  • Strong mentoring skills and the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
  • Hands-on approach to leadership, remaining involved in coding and technical decision-making.
  • Clear and concise communication, capable of translating complex technical concepts for a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders at all levels.

What’s in it for You

  • Freedom and autonomy: We’re a high-trust team, and you’ll have lots of independence to solve problems in your own way, with plenty of help from the team when needed.
  • Minimal bureaucracy: We don’t like to get bogged down with meetings and red tape. We aim to be efficient and keep momentum steady and sustainable.
  • Small & friendly team: We support each other, have fun, and joke around.
  • Our network: We are a community of entrepreneurial SaaS professionals who regularly exchange ideas, knowledge, learning, and expertise internally.
