Job Description

The majority of human knowledge remains offline, confined within individuals’ experiences or in books and papers accessible only to experts. Despite over a billion internet users, only a small number contribute their knowledge online. Our goal is to democratize access to all kinds of knowledge—ranging from politics to art, cooking to coding, etymology to personal experiences—so that anyone can learn from others. Our mission is to share and expand the world’s knowledge, and we’re assembling a top-tier team to help us achieve this.

About the Team:

Creating a global knowledge-sharing ecosystem and a platform for businesses to engage with our audience requires a multidisciplinary approach. We’re designing systems that make sharing knowledge rewarding and discovery easy, while scaling to accommodate worldwide participation. Our diverse team, with varied backgrounds and experiences, is empowered to influence strategy.

Our designers integrate insights from psychological and social dynamics, community and network theory, and systems and policy design, alongside traditional design skills. Product design at Quora directly impacts product strategy. Designers work on a wide range of projects, from ranking to UI, internationalization to moderation systems, validating design decisions through A/B testing and user studies. We prioritize rigor and empathy equally, striving for candor, holism, and awareness in our work.

About the Role:

Quora designers are strategic generalists who can code. As a technical product designer, you’ll oversee your designs from conception to completion, as designers at Quora play a central role on every product team. This ensures the correct problems are being addressed with appropriate solutions. Embedded in a product team focused on a major user-facing area of Quora, you will help democratize access to knowledge with a balance of rigor and empathy. Designers make complex product decisions, develop solutions, and collaborate with cross-functional teams, implementing their designs in code. You will prototype, iterate, ship new features, fix bugs, and improve products weekly.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify high-impact opportunities, design features aligned with business goals, and clearly communicate your decision-making rationale.
  • Navigate ambiguity and drive ideas forward while building relationships with peers.
  • Collaborate with engineers to scale designs globally, work with designers for feedback, and partner with data scientists and user researchers to evaluate your work’s impact.
  • Design interactions for new features and contribute to or apply design systems as needed.
  • Work independently and efficiently on multiple projects.
  • Use React to implement your designs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Availability for meetings and spontaneous communication during Quora’s “coordination hours” (Mon-Fri: 9am-3pm Pacific Time).
  • A portfolio showcasing digital design skills across apps and other platforms, with effective interaction and strong visual design.
  • 2+ years of experience designing products with clear, effective interactions to achieve business goals.
  • 2+ years of experience writing production-level front-end code: React, HTML, CSS, and JS.
  • Experience designing and shipping multiple product features, whether building from scratch or iterating on existing designs.
  • Ability to think strategically about complex social products and update perspectives with new learnings.
  • Proven track record of using data and/or user research to inform and evaluate design solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest or experience in designing scalable products.
  • Experience with A/B testing and a metrics-driven environment.
  • Delivered high-quality mobile experiences for social media products.
