Job Description

The majority of human knowledge remains offline, residing in people’s experiences or in books and papers accessible only to experts. Despite over a billion internet users, only a small portion contribute their knowledge online. Our goal is to democratize access to all kinds of knowledge—from politics to art, cooking to coding, linguistics to personal experiences—so anyone can learn from others. Our mission is to share and expand the world’s knowledge, and we’re assembling a top-tier team to help us achieve this.

About the Team:

Creating a global knowledge-sharing ecosystem and a platform for businesses to connect with our audience requires a multidisciplinary approach. To fulfill our mission, we design systems that make sharing knowledge rewarding and discovery effortless, while scaling to support global participation. We are building a diverse team with varied backgrounds and experiences, empowered to influence strategy.

Our designers integrate insights from psychological and social dynamics, communities and networks, and systems and policy design, along with traditional design skills. Product design is crucial to our strategy and direction, with our VP of Design reporting directly to our CEO. Our work spans ranking, UI, internationalization, and moderation systems, validated through A/B testing and user studies, as we value both rigor and empathy. We strive for candor, holism, and awareness in our work.

About the Role:

Quora designers are versatile generalists. As a product designer, you’ll oversee your designs from concept to implementation: brainstorming solutions, iterating on visuals and interactions, and coding your designs yourself. You will work on various aspects from ranking to UI, internationalization to moderation systems, and validate your decisions through A/B testing and user studies, valuing rigor and empathy equally.

Responsibilities:

  • Work on a product team focused on a significant user-facing area of Quora. Identify high-impact opportunities, design features to achieve goals, and explain your decisions.
  • Collaborate with engineers to define features and functionality, with other designers for feedback, and with data scientists and user researchers to evaluate your work’s impact.
  • Design interactions for new features, using existing design patterns and creating new ones across our platforms.
  • Implement your designs using React.
  • Work efficiently on multiple projects, shipping new features, bug fixes, and small improvements several times a week.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Availability for meetings and communication during Quora’s “coordination hours” (Mon-Fri: 9am-3pm Pacific Time).
  • A portfolio demonstrating relevant design capabilities is required. Applications without portfolios will not be reviewed.
  • Technical competence with front-end technologies: React, HTML, CSS, JS.
  • Ability to think at a high level about a complex, social product, and clearly explain reasons for new features and changes.
  • Experience in creating effective interactions to achieve product or business goals.
  • Demonstrated visual design skills, particularly in visual hierarchies, typography, spacing, and color.
  • Interest in using data and user research to inform design decisions. Experience with A/B testing is a plus.
  • The number of years of professional experience is not important to us.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest or experience in designing for ads, mobile, or user growth.
  • Experience with effective A/B testing.
  • Experience with server-side languages like Python.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our company. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
