Product Manager, Core Product

Job Description

Buffer is undergoing a transformation into a multi-product company, and at the heart of this evolution lies our Core product team. This team concentrates on enhancing user experiences shared across our products, such as login processes, onboarding procedures, billing systems, management of social accounts, and team member interactions. Product Managers at Buffer collaborate seamlessly with engineering and product design teams, conducting thorough research and delving into data analysis.

We’re seeking an individual to cultivate Buffer Core into the cornerstone that connects our present and future products. This position entails breaking down our vision into actionable strategies and priorities, while actively driving progress and achieving results alongside the team.

This is a full-time, remote position, and Buffer is committed to providing equal opportunities to all applicants. As a remote team, we have the privilege of welcoming team members from anywhere globally. We value creating an inclusive work environment and encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds to apply.

About Buffer Core: Buffer has expanded into a suite of three products: Buffer Publish (our flagship product with $1.5 million in Monthly Recurring Revenue), Buffer Reply (our social engagement solution with $37,000 in MRR), and Buffer Analyze (our newest offering with $3,000 in MRR). While we have nearly 80,000 paying customers across these products, our current offerings lack seamless integration.

Buffer Core is dedicated to crafting shared user experiences across our existing and upcoming products. Key initiatives include implementing a unified sign-on experience, integrated billing, and facilitating seamless transitions between our products for customers.

The role of Buffer Core: We’re in search of an experienced Product Manager to play a pivotal role in Buffer’s multi-product strategy. This role requires someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, enjoys hands-on work with a small team, and excels in communication with various stakeholders to gather input, keep everyone informed, and drive decision-making. Additionally, this role involves developing APIs for other teams to leverage in creating experiences, making prior technical experience valuable.

Reporting to the Chief Customer Officer, you’ll collaborate with Engineers, an Engineering Manager, and a Product Designer on a daily basis. You’ll also work closely with the CEO, Head of Design, Customer Research Lead, and Data team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and communicate the product vision for Buffer Core, ensuring alignment with the company’s overall direction.
  • Make informed prioritization decisions, balancing quality standards with advancements ranging from incremental expansions to innovative features.
  • Engage in various tasks to ensure the success of the product and team, such as QA, bug reproduction, customer interviews, and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders throughout the company to gather input and maintain transparency.
  • Work with a Product Designer to create intuitive user experiences for account settings, onboarding, and billing.
  • Establish high standards for quality and reliability, fostering trust among customers in Buffer’s Core product functionality.
  • Develop flexible and well-documented APIs for login, onboarding, billing, and security settings.
  • Advocate for the customer, ensuring the team remains focused on identifying and solving customer problems.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Proficiency in UX design and design tools such as Sketch or Figma.
  • Strong technical understanding and familiarity with lean product development methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with engineers in prioritizing technical trade-offs.
  • Capability to comprehend external API specifications and assess technical feasibility.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex concepts.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools like Looker, with basic SQL experience being beneficial.
  • Familiarity with key SaaS metrics such as MRR, Churn, LTV, CAC, and ARPU.
  • Experience or willingness to learn customer and UX research methodologies.
  • Comfort working on products and interfaces with high scalability.
  • Knowledge of growth tactics like A/B testing and statistical concepts.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, capable of navigating conflicting requests.
  • Emphasis on accessibility, inclusivity, and empathy in product development.
  • Enjoyment in both starting new projects and seeing them through to completion.
  • Experience with SaaS self-serve onboarding and billing flows is advantageous but not required.
  • A forward-thinking mindset, understanding the foundational role Buffer Core plays in connecting products and anticipating future needs.

What We Value: At Buffer, we prioritize clear communication, transparency, open-mindedness, empathy, and patience. We seek individuals who embrace these values and thrive in a collaborative environment where self-improvement, honesty, and openness are encouraged.

Perks and Benefits: In addition to our unique culture, we offer various perks and benefits to support your professional and personal growth, including technology allowances, learning stipends, health insurance, competitive salaries adjusted for cost of living and experience, remote work opportunities, stock options, generous time off policies, international company retreats, and more.
