Reports to: Dylan Baker, Research Engineer at The DAIR Institute

About The DAIR Institute:

The Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR) is committed to interdisciplinary AI research with a focus on ethics and foresight. Our institute is decentralized to facilitate participation from diverse backgrounds while being embedded in local communities. We prioritize making our work accessible and beneficial to impacted communities, rather than solely relying on research papers accessible to a select few. Learn more about DAIR at https://dair-institute.org.

Position Summary:

As an intern at DAIR, you will contribute to our mission of communicating research to the public through creative means. Working closely with Dylan and other team members, you will develop a creative project aimed at reaching communities that may benefit from, but lack access to, our work at DAIR.

One key deliverable will be the creation of a zine (examples include: coveillance, A People’s Guide to Tech, zines about labor organizing), both in print and digital formats. However, there is room for additional outputs based on your interests and the selected topic, such as posters, workshops, interactive web pages, participation in zine festivals, or other artistic interventions. The primary goal is to effectively communicate DAIR’s work to relevant communities, allowing for creative flexibility.

You will be expected to participate in weekly team meetings and maintain regular communication with your host.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills with a proactive approach to seeking assistance when needed
  • Proficiency in writing, particularly in scientific/technical or educational contexts
  • Interest in grassroots movement organizing, particularly in the tech sector
  • Familiarity with the tech industry/AI ecosystem and an understanding of the social implications of AI (preferred, but not mandatory)

Candidates should possess at least one of the following:

  • Experience in graphic design and/or illustration
  • Previous involvement in creating zines through any medium
  • Basic knowledge of web design and development tools (HTML/CSS/JavaScript)
  • Proficiency in an artistic medium suitable for this work (e.g., traditional illustration, mixed media art, web/print design). Note: AI-assisted art practices are not desired.

Work Location & Environment:

The DAIR Institute operates fully remotely, but this position requires alignment with a time zone having at least 3 hours of overlap with Pacific and Eastern time zones to facilitate close collaboration with your host.

Application Information:

To apply, please submit your CV/resume and a portfolio of your work by March 6, 2024.

Equal Opportunity Employer:

The DAIR Institute, sponsored by Code for Science & Society (CS&S), is committed to fostering diversity and inclusivity across all levels of the organization. We value the contributions of all our team members and strive to create an environment where everyone can thrive. All qualified applicants will be considered for employment regardless of race, nationality, age, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status, gender identity or expression, or any other legally protected status.
