Remote Software Engineer Launchpad

Job Description

Protocol Labs is at the forefront of computing innovation, aiming to propel humanity forward. As a product-development lab, we build protocols and tools with a team of passionate people, including teammates and community members. Our globally distributed teams work remotely to enhance the internet, exploring advancements in fields like crypto, networks, and distributed systems.

Define and Build the Future of Web Technology

We are seeking Software Engineers to join the Web3 development community through PL Launchpad, our new cohort-based onboarding program. Many developers are eager to dive into the decentralized web and blockchains but need support, guidance, and expert training. We provide an on-ramp to Web3, helping Web2 experts upgrade and apply their skills.

During our 6-week Web3 onboarding program, you’ll master protocols like IPFS, Filecoin, IPLD, and libp2p through hands-on labs, training, and projects. You’ll also form relationships across the Protocol Labs Network and match with a Web3 role that aligns with your skills and interests.

Launchpad Software Engineering at Protocol Labs

Launchpad accelerates the transition to Web3 by onboarding new developers from the Web2 community, equipping them with the necessary skills, tools, and connections to impact projects across the Protocol Labs Network. You’ll start by learning the fundamentals of IPFS, libp2p, Filecoin, and related projects, preparing you to help build a more resilient, secure, and distributed web. Our community values rigorous engineering, curiosity, and a passion for open source.

As a Software Engineer in the Protocol Labs Network, you will:

  • Develop the next generation of peer-to-peer software on projects like libp2p, IPFS, and Filecoin.
  • Design and implement performant and resilient distributed applications.
  • Solve challenging problems in low-trust distributed systems and new product development.
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team including engineering, design, community, product, and business.
  • Create a personal project that showcases your interests and learnings from Launchpad.
  • Make multiple OSS contributions to core protocols and tools, guided by a senior mentor within the PL Network.
  • Receive 1:1 mentorship from experts behind the PL Protocols.
  • Build relationships with founders, leaders, and engineers across the Web3 community.
  • Team-match with a project that aligns with your skills, interests, and passions.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of industry experience as a Software Engineer.
  • Strong understanding of CS principles and their application in software design.
  • Experience in designing and shipping complex Web2 projects.
  • Expertise in one or more areas: distributed systems, networking, storage, production engineering/benchmarking, productivity tools, or DevOps.
  • Proven track record of independently driving projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both technical and non-technical.
  • Team-oriented with a strong sense of process and collaboration patterns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience leading open source projects or guiding their communities.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript, Go, or Rust.
  • Knowledge of security engineering or cryptography principles.
  • Experience with large-scale systems, particularly in networking, performance, storage, or reliability engineering.
  • Familiarity with decentralized building blocks such as DHTs, consensus protocols, smart contracts, blockchain, or p2p networking.
