Job Description

Change.org is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join a new team dedicated to developing tailored solutions for Change.org’s platform in key developing countries across Asia, Latin America, and Africa. As the largest tech platform focused on civic action globally, Change.org boasts 100 million monthly users and launches 50,000 campaigns monthly. With staff spanning over a dozen countries, and a user-driven revenue model, we’re rapidly scaling. Our model has proven to be a catalyst for social change and citizen leadership, with significant potential for further growth. Our users achieve campaign victories for change every hour, from legislative reforms to combating corruption and violence against women. Our focus is on empowering users, particularly in emerging markets, by enhancing the accessibility and usability of our platform.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to directly impact millions of users by making our campaign tools more robust and enabling microdonations at scale, with a specific emphasis on non-Western democracies. We’re looking for someone capable of working effectively at scale, managing priorities independently, and driving progress autonomously. The ideal candidate will possess 4-5 years of relevant engineering experience beyond coding, including monitoring, integration testing, and production support.

This is a full-time position with location flexibility, collaborating with a globally distributed team and reporting to the Foundation’s Engineering Lead in Victoria, Canada. Key responsibilities include integrating global payment platforms with local gateways, optimizing petition flows, ensuring a seamless user experience across all countries, and maintaining service availability and reliability in production. Additionally, you’ll contribute to feature delivery, coach and support other team members, and drive best engineering practices.

Requirements include strong communication skills, proficiency in English, full-stack development experience, and familiarity with JavaScript frameworks such as React, Angular, or Backbone. Experience with Node.js/Javascript, Ruby/Rails, or Elixir is preferred, along with designing and building scalable, distributed systems and agile methodologies. Nice-to-haves include experience with payment gateways, GraphQL, containers, event-driven architecture, and AWS.

You’ll work with an exciting, modern stack including React.js front-end, microservices architecture, and data stores such as Postgres, redis, and Cassandra, all hosted on AWS. The compensation package includes extended medical benefits, generous paid time off, and parental leave. The evaluation process involves an initial interview, a take-home assignment, and interviews with the Engineering Lead, Product Manager, and a panel of engineers.

We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and perspectives to apply, as we strive to increase diversity and inclusion within our team. Change.org is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone has the power to create change. If you’re passionate about our mission and thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, we invite you to join us on our journey towards a more empowered world.
