Senior Software Engineer

Job Description

As a senior software engineer at Alpaca, you will be instrumental in building and scaling the systems and services that support our platform, enabling millions of users to trade billions of dollars worth of assets.

The market data team focuses on enhancing Alpaca’s architecture related to data products like stocks, options, crypto, and forex markets. You will oversee the public API structure and documentation for both streaming and historical endpoints. The team aims to create a cohesive, developer-friendly API and is responsible for planning, experimenting, and deploying new services and libraries to address our significant technical challenges as we grow rapidly.

We are seeking senior or staff engineers dedicated to providing high-quality solutions, with strong fundamentals and proven experience in large-scale architecture. You should be ready to challenge conventions and have a deep understanding of POSIX-like operating systems, modern infrastructure, and orchestration practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Influence the architecture of Alpaca’s market data systems
  • Design highly scalable, mission-critical systems
  • Focus on minimizing latency
  • Develop backend services and lead architecture focused on scalability and resilience
  • Ensure software quality and maintain test coverage
  • Participate in code reviews
  • Troubleshoot incidents and bugs
  • Be available for on-call engineering projects as needed

Qualifications:

  • At least 4 years of experience with large-scale systems
  • Proficiency in compiled imperative languages (e.g., Go, C, C++, Rust), with most critical services in Go
  • SQL or relational database skills
  • Familiarity with TCP/IP and UDP networking
  • Proficient with Linux/BSD and shell scripting
  • Passionate about Alpaca’s mission
  • Proven track record in architecting and leading medium-scale projects
  • Experience with Kubernetes or similar systems, primarily using Kubernetes via GKE
  • Experience with major cloud platforms, primarily GCP
  • Interest in financial markets

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of microservice architectures
  • Understanding of clean code principles
  • DevOps mindset
  • Experience with cloud networking (BGP, VPC peering)
  • Experience in building low-latency applications
  • Familiarity with distributed key-value stores
  • Experience with CI/CD
  • Passion or interest in financial markets
  • Knowledge of Agile/Scrum methodologies
  • Experience with observability, tracing, and continuous profiling
  • Experience with capacity planning and benchmarking
  • Knowledge of eBPF
