Software Engineer – App Stores Backend

This presents an exciting opportunity for an experienced software engineer who is passionate about open source software, Linux, and Web Services on a large scale. Within Canonical’s Store team, we’re responsible for developing and managing the backend services that drive the Snap Store and marketplaces. Our services primarily utilize Python, with some utilization of Golang. If you prioritize clean APIs, thrive on delivering results, and recognize the importance of rigorous testing for speed and reliability, you’ll be right at home here.

We’re gearing up for some exciting challenges ahead, including scaling our production architecture, expanding our store backend to accommodate additional package types, and enhancing our on-premises offerings for IoT and Enterprise solutions.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate remotely with a globally distributed team.
  • Develop clean web service APIs to support CLI and web frontend clients, primarily using Python (with optional use of Golang).
  • Design and implement new features and enhancements from concept to production and ongoing maintenance at scale.
  • Review code and technical designs from fellow engineers.
  • Engage in discussions and collaborate on finding optimal solutions.
  • Engage in remote work with occasional global travel for internal and external events (2 to 4 weeks annually).

Who You Are:

  • You have demonstrated professional proficiency in developing public-facing APIs and web applications using Python.
  • Your expertise lies primarily in backend code and infrastructure.
  • You’re proficient in both relational and non-relational databases, with a knack for designing efficient data models and optimizing queries.
  • You’re comfortable with Ubuntu as both a development and deployment platform.
  • You’ve demonstrated strong academic performance in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
  • You’re passionate about technology and enjoy working with diverse and talented individuals.
  • You possess qualities of curiosity, flexibility, articulateness, and accountability.
  • You value soft skills and exhibit passion, resourcefulness, thoughtfulness, and self-motivation.
